Q & A With Jessica Estevez of iHEARTDilla.com

When you did you say, you know what I'm going do to a site and its going to be called iHEARTdilla.com?

Well, I'm going to break it down for you. (It's a long but necessary first answer)

I lived in a small town called, Ocala, FL. So just imagine the hip hop scene there (no scene at all). Back in High School I took all four years of Television Productions. I was highly involved with this program. I was consumed and took what I did very seriously. I was a part of a live show that was aired weekly to the entire student body called, "Knightlife" and I also was in charge of the sports section. (So just like hip hop events, I was attending games, recording, and interviewing athletes).Being involved in this program is what made me have a "calling" on what I wanted to do as a career and that was in broadcasting/communications.

I moved to New York for college to pursue my passion. I always applied for positions at the major networks but never received a call back for a lousy interview. You cant really get to know someone from a one sheet resume. You have to meet them face to face, but unfortunately I never got that opportunity. I thought what I had always longed for would just be something that I could only dream about.

With all that said, I have always been a hip hop head. Last year, I started to check out the underground scene and I saw the passion and talent in all the artists that came to the stage. And because the females in hip hop are scarce people would approach me and always ask, "What do you do?." "Are you in the music industry?."

Back in February I attended the, "Jay $tay Paid" listening party. I so happened to get asked the same questions again. I had pondered the question and said to myself, "I should be in this industry!" I so happened to tell a friend Warren Britt that I had this idea of creating a website. A website solely for the purpose of promoting underground hip hop artists.

You know that saying, "always have to know somebody to be somebody." Well, that's the complete opposite of what I wanted to promote. Because, I too know how hard it can be to get noticed. The name iHEARTDilla was already in existence with my old Myspace URL and the newly made Twitter account. I had decided to go ahead and name my website iHEARTDilla.com and launch on June 23, 2009.

The meaning behind the name iHEARTDilla is simple; J Dilla is Hip Hop. When you think of Jay Dee you already know it's going to be nothing but pure greatness. The embodiment of what it should be. So when you think of iHD you know it's promoting great music.

Like Ghost Dog, seems you went in head long. How much of an adventure has it been to cultivate this burgeoning web portal?

I am still learning new things for the website within itself. About two months ago I relaunched iHD with a more professional redesign. Honestly, in a million years I would have never thought anything of it.I always get told that I literally came out of nowhere. I still don't see what I have done to catch the attention of so many people. I feel grateful, humbled and happy.

Seeing that there would be no site if it not for the existence of a man named James Yancey; How does it feel to have the support of the woman that birthed him?

Receiving the phone call from Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey was probably one of the happiest moments of my life. I can only say great things about that woman. When I explained to Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey and The J Dilla Foundation, what the site represented, they became very enthusiastic about it.

What have you learned about yourself while developing this site?

I have learned that if you put yourself out there in a positive and consistent way people will listen and start to take you seriously.

Do you realize how much of an inspiration what you do is for numerous onlookers that may never voice their affinity for your site or your movement?

I didn't even realize that I had a movement. So thank you for pointing that out. I'm just a real person, that loves hip hop music and believes in the talent.

What do you do to ensure there's a level of quality with everything you post? How do you decide what goes on the site?

I try to avoid posts that are already on the more popular hip hop sites. When it comes to music it's actually screened before being posted. I consider myself to be a very very picky person when it comes to music so that rule will continue throughout the content that's on iHD. My contributing writers have the freedom to write about anything hip hop related. I'm the cool boss to have. :)

Since launching your site, what social media tool or tools would you say have been the most useful in creating awareness about iHEARTDilla?

One of the top tools is myself. I am a people person. I have literally gone up to perfect strangers, shook hands and verbally promoted iHD. You will see me at a hip hop event weekly. It just never stops.

The second top tool is Twitter.com it has been the most helpful media tool to reach viewers outside of the underground scene in New York City. I am very supportive of this site. Without this Twitter my supporters/followers probably wouldn't be spammed as much, haha.

The third top tool are actual people. My supporters, followers, and aspiring hip hop artists.

How did you get involved with Beatminerz Radio?

Before I was with Beatminerz Radio, Evil Dee was my 1,000th follower on Twitter. He has said, that he likes my style and what I am doing. I had invited him to the "One Won't Do J Dilla Tribute" event that I was apart of back in February and he offered to Live Stream it. That same night is when DJ Bazarro, and DJ Wayneski of Beatminerz Radio had basically suggested that I needed my own show on Beatminerz Radio. Evil Dee and Mr. Walt offered me my own show which is now called, "The Independent's Day Show" with Jessica Estevez.

What has it been like to now be in front of a live camera interacting with your audience?

I absolutely love it. I have the best dj's spinning on my show. Every Saturday from 4-6 est. on www.dabeatminerz.com. My audience tells it like it is. If they hate or love the track that's airing on the show.
So, don't worry if you missed out on "The Independent's Day Show" Beatminerz Radio has an archive! ;)

You record a lot of video at shows. In the future, should we expect to see video segments produced by iHeartDilla.com?

The videos that I record will start getting posted to the iHD video section. I post the recorded videos on the iHD Facebook Fan page, and on Twitter so that my followers can see acts live.. At the end of the day I'm helping to promote these artists. As far as producing I'm up in the air with that idea.

In five years, what will be the look of iHEARTDilla.com? Where do you see it's evolution transforming it into?

In five years I'll be old. haha. No, but seriously I'm looking for it to be one of the popular hip hop sites fans go to on an everyday basis. A brand that I'm able to make an affordable living off of. Many doors are opening for myself and iHD and I'm very proud that it's being noticed. iHD will have more writers, more content and of course more supporters.

12 Days Of RazMas: Day 2. The Introduction - Spilled Milk - Top $ Raz

It's day two of 12 Days of RazMas and we're going to start from the best place. The beginning. The first track of an album should set the tone for it, right? Well let's see. We speak with both Top $ Raz and producer of the intro track Thinker, about working together and future collaborations.

1. What new challenges were you met with, creating your most recent release,"Spilled Milk"?

T$R: I faced the challenge of trying to be as honest as possible, yet still be relatable. At some point in recording the album I realized that it was more important to make music that people could connect to than it was to come up with the illest punchlines or catchiest party tune. I wanted to show people who I am as a person. I feel like although my first album was a valiant effort, it didn't exactly give you a clear description of who I am.

2. How did you meet Thinker (producer of the title track, "Spilled Milk" and "No Tears")?. What was it like working with him? Will there be more collaborations?

T$R: I met Thinker through my brother from another Kalil Kash. I believe the first time I spoke to thinker was through a Facebook chat. The first time we met was at Sin Sin in the lower east side. Before I met him I had my eyes on a dope track on his Myspace page for like two weeks. I knew I needed that beat for the album and if I got it it would be the intro.

It's great working with Thinker because he's extremely fast and productive. He understands the artist and really listens to them. There are a lot of future joints coming with Thinker. A few collaborations including, Ciph Diggy of Sleepwalkas and MC K~Swift, as well as some solo tracks for the next project. It's hard because every time Thinker sends me a beat I have an urge to make a new album, they're that ill, but he keeps tellin me to chill and just promote "Spilled Milk".

3. Mos Def on record said, 'The first cut should be the deepest...' Do you agree with this theory?

T$R: The first cut should definitely be one of the most personal. It's basically and overview of what to expect and an introduction to the artist. As underground artist on the come up we have to make sure that first track is a banger. We only get one chance out the gate. I know many people that press the eject button after the first track if it isn't to their liking. So I made sure I had a certified joint for my intro. Everyone that I've gotten feedback from put "Spilled Milk" near the top of their list as their favorite joints on the album.

4. What made you decide to work with Top $ Raz?

Thinker: After seeing him perform S.S.D.D. at "A Monthly Bondfire". I knew he'd be someone that I'd like to work with. I let Kalil Kash hear a few tracks on my Myspace page and soon after Raz reached out. One of the tracks on the page would end up being the intro and title track of his album "Spilled Milk".

5. How do feel about your production being the first thing heard when people hear this record?

Thinker: It's an honor and pleasure to have my track selected to set off an album that I enjoy listening to and would recommend for others to give a full listen to. I feel like it sets the mood for the "Spilled Milk" experience.

Tomorrow, "12 Days Of RazMas" continues with Day 3: "No Tears"...

Q&A With TastyKeish

Freehiphopnow.com is on a mission to create awareness about more female artists and general contributors to the culture, so for this Q&A we interviewed one of the hardest working women in New York City, Tasty Keish, co-host of WBAI 99.5 FM's, 'Rise Up Radio' and her own online lifestyles, music and entertainment show,'Taste Of The Town'.

What is your fascination with radio, with being a media personality? Are those things truly your passion?

My fascination....with radio... I guess it's from when I was little and it took work and good timing to make a mixtape off songs playing on the radio. I would make these little mixes and periodically add my voice to them doing intros and using fake call letters. I thought radio personalities were Gods and Goddesses, they gave you prizes for calling at the right time, they made you feel special if they gave you a shout out and they talked to and about famous people all day! Back then there was even on-air talent beefs (Wendy vs. Funkmaster Flex, Flex vs. Steph Lova, etc...), I had my ear out for beef like they were rappers!

I also came of age when Hot 97 first started and Kiss-FM was what 'Hot' is right now... All I knew about radio came from listening to the best on-air personalities, especially the women because to get air time in NY, is to be in the top tier of personalities. I have to def say Angie Martinez and Wendy Williams (to a certain point) shaped my persona and built my fascination. They have a connection with people that even in this ipod, computer driven world, people still say "Yo, it's 3pm... I wonder who's sitting with Angie?" and they turn on the radio. I want that to be me one day. (sidebar: I'm such a fan...someone told me they met Angie face to face and that she had clear braces...suddenly I wanted to keep my clear braces forever- lol)

You’ve been doing quite a bit of hosting over the last couple of months. How did the opportunities come about?

I think the hosting came out of opportunities that my co-host, Digo and I made for ourselves outside of Rise Up Radio. We'd already been best friends thru the show and thought if we could merge our energies we could put together our own shows. So we did the Fresh Roasted series and some parties just try to get our names up in the streets. For the live events, he would do alot of the behind the scenes and even performing and I would do customer service and host the event. People were also asking me to host their weekly parties and be a presence that would set it off every week- which I kind of went hardbody doing... I had more fun on a weekday than I ever had in my life...

But, from there and thru the radio show, we built a Rolodex so to speak of bands that we liked and that liked our show (big ups to MC Kswift and Divine, my other brothers on Rise Up Radio). On Dec 31st 2008, thru much strife and drama in my life at the time, Tony from ADM called me and decided to harness my hyper active energy and asked me to host their monthly showcase at Public Assembly... From there others have been doing the same. And I love it... Ridiculously love it.

You’re an extremely busy woman. When you get a chance to actually listen to music, what are you listening to? Where are you listening?

If I’m not busy... I’m not working hard enough :) I actually do listen to music though. A lot of my education comes from seeing musicians live shows and other REAL artists co-signing fellow artists to me. I have fallen in damn near love with artists off seeing them live. I get smitten. Right now, I’m smitten over Illa J (who I haven’t seen live...yet), I love my local yokels... Big one time to Homeboy Sandman, anyone in NRO (this means you Kswift), Trezure the Empress (I swear she made me cry when she sang...serious), Daru and Rena, ADM, The Real Live show, and my boy Digo (the king of crack rock) there's A LOT more but I can't think now and if I forget- someone will be mad I didn't say their name. If any of the above tell me to listen to this joint, I will, cuz good musicians listen to good music right??

I do listen to the radio to see what people are dancing to and because I love my big money artists too- lol I love mainstream- YEA, I SAID IT!!! How else am I gonna know what to dance to at the club? lol.

In the end, if I like you, you get spun in the car. If not, I frisbee the cd and keep the case. Real talk.

With a name like TastyKeish, and being charming as you are, I’m sure you’re met with a lot of naughty advances. What's the story behind that name? Spill it...

Thank You. Charming....huh? Are you flirting with me? The story is sooo not naughty but the advances are...lol. If had a nickel for the amount of times I’m asked "how tasty are you?" - I would be Scrooge McDuck swimming in money rich!

The name came up after a loooooooooong series of failed names that didnt stick or wasn't at all me. My family already called me Kiki and it makes me think of Kiki Shepard, the lady from the Apollo dressed in ball gowns that made you touch the wooden stump...and I thought it was weird- lol. Then I had some names, I would rather not say...

As far as TastyKeish goes, I'm a foodie x's ten and it's the word Tasty as a word just perfectly describes the feeling after having devoured a hot plate of fantastic food. And people have a way of describing me as "cute" all the time, which totally of stunts your sex appeal. So what is Tasty? It's the word Cute all grown up! So I joined it to my real name and dropped the "a" off Keisha. Voila!

How’d you get involved with Rise Up Radio? What do you feel your responsibilities are as one host of a show that tackles more then just new music, but also serious human issues and politics?

Rise Up Radio has been on the air about 3 or 4 years longer than we've all been there. And they were looking for new hosts about 4 years ago,...I filled out the paperwork and made it to a meeting. from those meetings other potential hosts kept falling off. It's been a continuous rotation of hosts, but that's how Kswift, Digo, and I met and have been together ever since, its very romantic- lol.

On a station like WBAI, there's a legacy to uphold the standards that Pacifica set over 50 years ago. I went in knowing that my responsibilities were to the community first and foremost. With that being said, the youth voice has been undeserved in media as a whole, Pacifica, NPR, CBS, NBC, this includes all of them. What we do at Rise Up Radio with our choice of topics and guests, is strive to bring you our points of view on the world at large no matter how much we clash with each other over them. So to bring attention to economic, social, and political topics is a must. And we (youth, Hip-hop,etc...) have a lot to say.

What’s your Facebook and Twitter game looking like?

MAN, my FB game is WICKED, but my MySpace is all but DECEASED- lol. I hated Facebook at first, people all in your business knowing what you do for a living...it just wasn’t for me. But now, I’ve embraced it and let it do the talking for me and since then I have nothing love for it.

I just got on Twitter like 2 weeks ago, so I’m not quite there yet. But I will conquer it...feel free to follow me at twitter.com/tastykeish :)

What do you most enjoy about being involved with new media? What don’t you?

I love that you can make your own opportunities in new media... You can build your brand before any agent gets to you and tries to "fix" you. I love meeting people I would never have met, and then actually meeting them in real life, it feels like u should hug instead of shake hands :)

The thing I hate about new media is dating and assumptions. People read into or don't look carefully at what their seeing and draw a lot of false conclusions. And it can be torture if you can't handle all the input.

What was the last book that you read? Did you take anything valuable away from it?

The last book I fully read was "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini...I read it because of the hype around it, it was much deserved... The book I’m reading now and slower than I usually do is: "An Unbroken Agony: Haiti, From Revolution to the Kidnapping of a President" by Randall Robinson. I'm always amazed that a people that I come from continue to be to disrespected the way they are. Can you imagine...? F-ck that, can you FATHOM, WINNING your independence from a more powerful country (France) to be made to pay THEM for the rest of your existence? And for that to be backed up by ALL other world powers, thus NEGATING the win and setting them up to fail all the way up to the present....All because for black slaves to win its independence from the white super power of its time was just too much of a threat. A threat that slaves of America would hear of and organize and do the same. I just wonder what would have happened if Haiti had gotten a fair chance...

Are you a pet person?

Nope, I’m a people person. Let me know when you can keep people as pets, then I’m all for it...lol

Favorite meal?

I don’t have a favorite meal. But my favorite things to eat, are mac and cheese, peach cobbler, lobster, conch, and really awesome steak.

What were you like in high school? In college?

In HS, I was a complete tomboy... I never made it to the more-than-friends window and I wasn't cool enough for the girls. But I had my school newspaper that I wrote for and by senior year became editor-in-chief. I used to write music reviews and one sexual health piece that my mom framed- lol. I even eulogized Biggie when he died, I was such a spazz...

In college I was learning how to be a lady finally... I only enjoyed the classes I wanted to and stayed awake just enough for the classes I didn’t. I was part of the school radio station, peace to BCR, Brooklyn College Radio and I even had the pleasure of interviewing Immortal Technique, I'm not sure I realized what was happening at the time. But now, I fully appreciate that moment...maybe he'll come on Rise Up :) Since it’s a commuter school, nobody was around long enough to make fond memories...

Where’d you get that blue dress you were rockin in the last installment of, ‘Taste Of The Town’. (Dug the stockings.)

Ohhh my word...so you like the dress? I'm such a rack rover, I got that dress at Express, stockings from Target...straight suburban living it at the mall! I usually wear t-shirts from local designers but I felt that night called for something people don't usually see me in.

When’s the new album droppin? :)

No album, ever. Maybe a mixtape :)

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions?

THANK YOU for asking! I had a great time, let's do this again-lol

Monday Myspace Jack! : Lady Luck - Christina Ghubril

Lady Luck - Christina Ghubril - Download Here

Lady Luck swang beauty in her favor
Blew 14 candles and out popped womanhood.
Long locks begged to be stroked
eyes melting down her back to the curves and swivel of hips
tasting their first drop of power.
Nights spent flashing Cinderella tales over teddy bear borders--
Believed prince called charming would find her disarming
but he locked doors, spilled his semen on the floor to memories of
Pretended panties pulling off in his fingertips
As they stroked his own developed manhood.

Daytime games she wanted to learn
Cat calling
Didn’t see prick eyes poke her behind
plotting sex traps for street walking girls in school dresses.
boys with beards
hunger for the newest, unused flesh.
Lady Luck caught in the jungle of phallic tree traps-
Sweetness drip drip drip from her pores
He ties burlap through un-kissed mouth to keep her from “no!”
mis step--he dictated and amen she lost her hymen
as single act penetration coursed deep beyond her arteries

Struggling to keep mouth above neck above memories of not enough air
thick body forces screams below pillows
Before, untouched except for the stolen kiss on her secret’s back porch
Now Lady Luck’s love is stolen.
naked and shamed body remembering childhood.
As she watches the holy “and 2 shall become one” dissipating into fog spots on his rearview mirror
bruises form on her body in shapes she will declare and name tomorrow to distract herself from chemical invasion
as Dr. (Rosen) forces body to reject what she will never forget.

Tears tangled in knotted hair
Over keeper of precious diamonds
ripping jewels from sacred places.
left ceiling now flashing rotted flesh.
Maggoty Corpse kissing private dreams
where little girl memories become big girl fears.
Sleep calls for limbs writhing
can’t grasp anything
While she tries to cover closed eyes from
flashbacks and thick blankets rotted with anger.
love is twisted
tangled in oak branches
hovering over his someday grave.

morning wakes rays shining blood memories in her eyes
needing someone to fight the last nights that shout out her belief in words like
“tainted” “unworthy” “ruined”
‘cause now mirror reflects just enough to touch and melt and leave in a mess on the floor.
Sees eyes bloodshot and heavy
Whispering, “Lady luck,
victim of flesh traps,
who’s gonna find you now?”
